Joel 2: 12 and 13
12 “Even now,” declares the Lord,
“return to me with all your heart,
with fasting and weeping and mourning.”
13 Rend your heart
and not your garments.
Return to the Lord your God,
for he is gracious and compassionate,
slow to anger and abounding in love,
and he relents from sending calamity.
Growing up in my parent’s house was fun. I hear people say “Oh my husband loves his dinner so much” oh well, my dad loves his meals from breakfast to dinner! Since I was born, I can count how many times we didn’t have to cook 3 times a day because that is pretty much the routine. Breakfast before 8am, start preparing lunch by 10am to finish say 12noon, everyone should be done eating lunch by 2pm and starting preparing for dinner by 4 to be served “hot” by 6pm and then everyone goes to bed by 9pm.
I bet you are thinking if we can ever do without food? To be honest it’s hard but guess what? in my house there are compulsory fasting, lol. My parents knew that there are some situations in life that you cannot handle without fasting. In Mark 9:29 when the disciples could not heal the demon possessed boy whose father brought him to them, Jesus came and healed him and when they were alone they asked him why they couldn’t do it “And he said unto them, This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting.”
We fasted a lot. One time we had a three-day fast and my brother decided to go and visit my aunt and her husband for some time, he was happy because he didn’t have to do the fast with us. Anyway long story short, he arrived my aunt’s house and she and hubby were on 21 days fast(hahahahahaha).
I decided to talk about this now because the muslims just ended a month’s fast and for some people fasting comes easy while for some, not so much. The highest I have done is 31 days, my parents have done 70 days on 2 occasions. I never offered to help. Now you may have fasted only 3days or even less or maybe not at all; if so, do not worry it is very okay.
I realised that people don’t really understand what fasting is about. You see the human body needs food to keep going. Since birth, there is no day that one does not eat except they don’t have. Now, i know some people who think fasting means don’t touch any food from 12 midnight to 6pm because if you do, then you are no more fasting! Come on and loosen up, our God does not care about doctrines and it is not about how perfectly you go about it. You see there are some people who like my family love food so much. If you can’t let go of food just yet then I have good news for you! Fasting is not about letting go of food alone, it is letting go of anything you can hardly live without. Some people are addicted to computer games, TV programs, snacking all the time, coffee or anything you can imagine. Even social media, some people cannot do without going online every hour. You can start fasting from there before your faith is strong to let go of food.
Another thing is this, I know some people who can go a whole day without eating or just having a little snack that carriers them the whole day. Now, it is only logical to think fasting 6-6 isn’t really a big deal to them. Trust me if food means a lot to you, start your first fast by missing breakfast or lunch, then extend a little and then a little more. Missing a meal to you is a big deal so God sees what you had to let go to fast and pray compared to someone who on a normal can go without food the whole day.
In Daniel 10:3, we see how Daniel fasted. It says: I ate no choice food; no meat or wine touched my lips; and I used no lotions at all until the three weeks were over.” Well, I for one cannot go a day of my life without lotioning my body God knows. So that is a big deal for me. Even though my parents taught me the popular way to fast which is to skip meals, they also told me about the Daniel’s fast but we just never tried it. So don’t let anyone frighten you that God will not listen to your prayer if you don’t skip meals. Tell them what David said when Araunah offered him materials for free to build the temple of the Lord. His reply was this 2 Samuel 24:24″But the king replied to Araunah, “No, I insist on paying you for it. I will not sacrifice to the LORD my God burnt offerings that cost me nothing.” So David bought the threshing floor and the oxen and paid fifty shekels of silver for them. If it cost you something, God will accept it with Joy he only wants you to try.
So today i share an outfit I wore to church in April of this year. It was a khaki green suit which I paired with my lovely leopard pumps and mustard top. You must have noticed how obsessed I am with Court heels, I have a total of 13 court heels and got the 14th one yesterday. Hey, I love shoes what can i say?
On other note, if you follow my Facebook page (which of course you should), you will see that i celebrated my little brother who just finished high school and bagged 2 awards! I can’t be prouder. The first was for charisma: best dressed and second was bookworm for constant reading. A third one was for being the president of the fellowship of christian students (FCS) in the whole school. I am so excited and wished my mum was here to see him. I haven’t seen him in 2 years and was shocked by how tall he has grown. My little boy is only 18 years old. Anyway, celebrate with us please.
I guarantee you next week’s post will be very interesting and not as long as this. It’s just a little rant you will not want to miss. See you all next Sunday but until then, Keep the fire burning for Christ!
