THE CHRISTIAN YOUTH AND DRUGS/ALCOHOL

It was the early 80s and dad had just left university after 7 years of studying, he was posted to the southern city of Calabar for his National service he said and I quote “people said to me you will come back with lots of women and I had no idea what they were talking about”. You see, dad grew up in a christian family with devouted christian parents; his mum was active in the women fellowship in church and his dad was one of the pioneers of the church. All through secondary school he remained the good boy that he should be and even became an official in the Fellowship of Christian Students (FCS) in his school in Katsina State. Got into university and the whole story changed.

Having such upbringing meant no matter what, he had to show up in church on Sunday. Most Sundays he came hung over from the party the night before. He studied hard and partied even harder. What more can a young man ask for when he has all the women and liquor he needed? His life pretty much kept going round in circles and he felt a void inside which he tried to fill with more liquor and women. His weekend could be summarised into party-drink-women-hungover and then to church. He was up in the fence just sat there, one leg in the boat and one leg on the shore and of this kind of lukewarm christians God says “I will spit you out of my mouth!” Revelation 3:16

Then, he had a dream that changed his life forever. It was the mango season (You know this if you are African 🙂 ) and he wanted to get some mango so he stood under the tree with a really long stick swirling to see if he can get the fruit to fall to the ground. He tried and tried and tried again to no avail, he was hungry, tired and salivating. But guess what? His friend was on top of the tree holding onto the tree branch with one hand and licking his mango with the other as they both chatted away. Dad kept swirling his stick to get the mango still salivating and his friend ate his and threw the seeds to the ground and the process continued like that. He woke up in the middle of the night panting and confused as to what that might mean. Being born in a christian home, he knew that one popular way God spoke to his children was through dreams and you will know a normal dream from “a message from God” kinda dream.

Why didn’t I just ask my friend for a mango? Was the question he still didn’t understand. As he stood there wondering he thought about the Bible having answers to all of life’s questions and he went on the shelf, picked and dusted his Bible and began “the search”. He realised that the void he had within him could not be filled with alcohol nor could it be filled with women, the void was a void God created in each person only a relationship with HIM can fill it but just like the friend on the tree, God wants us to ask Him for help first.

Alcohol in the Christendom is a topic still debated to this day. This is because there is no scripture that says “thou shalt not drink alcohol” however, in most times when there is too much to drink in the Bible a bad event follows example: Noah had too much to drink and laid naked, his son Ham saw him lying naked and laughed and called his brothers Shem and Japhet who took a blanket and walking backwards so as not to see their father’s nakedness covered him. When he realised what happened, he blessed Shem and Japhet and laid a curse on Ham(that curse follows his descendants). Lot, Abraham’s nephew had too much to drink he got his 2 daughters pregnant.

Proverbs 20:1 Wine is a mocker, strong drink a brawler, And whoever is intoxicated by it is not wise.

Read Isaiah 5:11, 12 and 22 vs 11 says:

Woe to those who rise early in the morning
    to run after their drinks,
who stay up late at night
till they are inflamed with wine.

22 says: Woe to those who are heroes at drinking wine and champions at mixing drinks.

Pause here and read Proverbs 23:29-35

Ephesians 5:19 says do not get drunk with wine but be filled with the Holy Spirit. This implies that where one is present, the other is not. You see Lot and Noah were both great men of God but the moment Alcohol was present, they acted like mere men. Again, like any other of my teachings I cannot make you believe what you do not want to. All I am saying is search the scriptures and Judge for yourself. There is a reason we have the Holy spirit, ask him for directions. This is not about a debate to see who wins, it is a battle against the Devil that we can only win with the constant presence of the Holy Spirt why then do we seek to replace him when we need Him even more?

1 Corinthians 6:10 ….nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.

FASHION TODAY: You probably remember this jumpsuit from the blog post Here about forgiveness? Well, I tried to restyle the it, as you all know one of my shopping rule is to see if a piece can be worn differently before purchasing it. If you are able to restyle all your closet, you will wear clothes twice the size of your closet if that makes sense. I initially wanted to go with a white shirt inside like I wore to Church today but I had a change of mind few minutes to this photoshoot and went for the lime green instead (LOL).

What I am wearing: Jumpsuit: I love this Here and Here; Hat: budget friendly Here; Shoes: Here; Coat: Love this Here.

Thank you for stopping by,

Hihihihi, this is really a sublime piece of work touching a critical issue series of controversies have been raised and so far, that is your view. We hope it will mean something to those who take it as an advice. meanwhile there are alot more about this topic even in the bible particularly some plausible reasons why some take alcohol and reasons why it is permitted . I wouldn’t say this writing isn’t objective or stereotypical but as I have earlier on said “this is your view”.
sorry kipp not trying to be an atheist but can I ask a question?
    kipp: yes, sure
    me: thank you
me: ok what if, not all people take the bible as a manual for their lives, does this writing apply to them cos so far, you have been quoting from the bible and the bible alone. Don’t forget Christians care about their health. my small brain feels this argument would have hold more water if it covers some medical implications or dangers of alcohol intake to your body system particularly some chronic ailments caused by alcohol. it will mean so much to the pragmatists . this will as well cover a significant amount of audience not just some bible quotes that will say woe to those who wake up in the morning and Start taking alcohol. Does that make sense?
generally the writing was holistic and attaching personal stories historically in writing always make a work catchy which your work a touch of that. kudos.

Indeed Richard, it does have some medical implications but so does unforgiveness. However, when I wrote about unforgiveness I never stated how it can affect one’s health and same goes to most of my blog posts. The slogan on here is: Its all about Fashion and Christ and believe me Christ comes first before fashion for me. Now, if you want anything medical, you can see your doctor for that and I do understand that some churches/individuals are not against it but same goes for homosexuality but the word of the Lord remains!
I didn’t write my dad’s testimony just because I wanted to, I believe it will reach out to some people who are at a crossroad and you may not be one of them!
I am not in any way condemning drunkards but all I am saying is why waste your time staggering from the effects of wine when we need even more time to worship the master???
May the Lord grant us more understanding of His word. Amen

great write up. sometimes its not just the alcohol and women, I can think of a number of things we try to fill the void with, especially me😜. thank God for Jesus, nothing surpasses having a relationship with him.

Indeed Ruth, there a bunch of things aside women, alcohol and drugs but for the sake of one blog post I am concentrating on these ones. Like James said, friendship with the world is enmity with God (James 4:4). May we never be found wanting. Amen
